Almost half of our patients seek help for various neck problems.
The fine mechanics in the neck consist of a tight interaction between joints, sensitive depth
muscles and large parts of the nervous system. We are therefore completely dependent on the neck's
fine mechanics are intact to maintain balance, perform precise movements and orient
us by sensory impressions from sight and hearing.
The neck consists of seven vertebrae that extend from the head to the sternum. Between
each vertebra has discs that absorb shock and around each of the joints we have
muscles and ligaments that together carry out movement of the neck. Irritation or
Improper loading of one or more of the structures can lead to problems in the neck.
This fine mechanics makes our neck vulnerable to acute pain.
Neck pain can occur acutely or develop gradually over time. They are normally shared
into 3 groups: acute (recently occurring such as a kink), sub-acute (severity from 0-3
months) and chronic (duration over 3 months).
Non-specific neck pain is the most common form of neck pain. These can
occur after unfavorable strain on the neck, and can result from overstretching
different types of tissue, such as muscles or ligaments. They can also be caused and reinforced
of a number of other factors such as long-term stress, low mood and
lack of physical activity.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF NECK PAIN
● Impaired movement of the neck
● Mild to severe pain, diffuse or local
● Pain when moving
● Night pain, which in turn leads to fatigue
● Pain in static positions
● Pain down the arms, towards the chest or back of the chest
● Pain in the face
● Impaired concentration
In the case of long-term, complex neck problems, symptoms such as
dizziness, headache, tingling and numbness in arms, as well as shoulder and
chest back pain occur. As pain is subjective and all patients'
pain problems are unique, it is important to have an organized and thorough examination of them
your complaints in order to set up an adapted course of treatment for the patient.
WHAT CAN THE THERAPIST HELP WITH?
To determine the best treatment for you, a medical history and a
thorough clinical examination. The examination will rule out any disease or
neurological disorders. If necessary, the chiropractor can send on for diagnostic imaging
or the specialist health service. If the neck pain affects your ability to work, it can
the chiropractor, as primary contact, call in sick if necessary and give advice on
facilitation at work. We often see the best results through close collaboration between
chiropractor and physiotherapist for treatment and rehabilitation.
